The Nissan Serena is a compact van that was first produced in 1991 but was only made available to the UK market at the beginning of this century. The Serena was very affordable during its production run – and is even more so when purchased pre-owned.
The vehicle offers a flexible way of transporting up to eight people – or a handful of passengers and plenty of cargo. The Serena’s relatively narrow width makes it all the more manoeuvrable when it comes to navigating tapering roads. It also takes up about the same amount of space as a full-size car, which means it’s easy to park too.
This five-door vehicle allows easy access to its surprisingly spacious interior. The Serena is tall so headroom is more than adequate, and legroom is greater than you might expect, even in rearmost positions. The vehicle’s rear set of seats can be folded (or removed entirely), turning the Serena into a more typical cargo-conveying van. All models feature air-conditioning and electric front windows so, even with a full complement of people on board, a pleasant ambience can be maintained.
Of all the engines fitted within the Serena, a 1.6-litre petrol unit is the baseline option. This produces 95bhp, 131Nm of torque and is paired with five-speed manual transmission. Many models come with a 2.0-litre petrol unit, which delivers 124bhp and 169Nm of torque and optimal acceleration: 0-60mph in roughly 12 seconds. A 2.0-litre diesel engine, meanwhile, is the most fuel-efficient choice, returning up to 34mpg. In addition to transporting large numbers of people, the Serena can also tow up to 1,200kg.
