The first-generation Insight was a two-door, two-seat coupé that sold in only small numbers in the UK, and finding one is very difficult. On sale from 2000 to 2005, it could achieve in excess of 80mpg and many are exempt from road tax.

The second-generation Insight (2009 - 2014) was a much bigger seller, adopting a five-door hatchback body style that’s very similar in silhouette to the Prius, and offered in a range of trim levels. Fuel economy was less impressive the second time around, but the extra space, practicality and comfort on offer make up for that. It’s easy to drive and very well-suited to town or city driving, thanks to the electric motor that offers instant acceleration out of junctions.
