The Nissan Cube has been in continuous production in Japan since 1998 and was only made available in the UK from 2008 for a relatively short while. As a consequence, the car is a rare sight on these shores, but always a welcome one.

The Cube certainly lives up to its name, with its wonderfully rectangular design. However, the Cube is anything but square – it really stands out from other cars, and it’s also very well made.

The Cube’s practical interior ensures that there is more than enough room for four adults to travel very comfortably, while its expansive windows ensure that visibility is extremely good. Air conditioning and front and rear electric windows are included as standard, as is a glass roof complete with sunblind. With rear seats in place, luggage space is 323 litres; with the same seats folded, capacity rises to a remarkable 1,645 litres. The rear row can be slid forward too, providing impromptu expansion of the boot.

A 1.6-litre 110bhp petrol engine was the first to be installed in the Cube, paired, typically, with a five-speed manual gearbox or continuously variable transmission. This delivers up to 42mpg and a 151g/km CO2 emissions figure. A 1.5-litre diesel unit was introduced a little later, producing 108bhp, as much as 47.9mpg and emissions as low as 135g/km.
