The Nissan Patrol dates as far back as 1951 but it wasn’t until the 1990s that it received its first proper UK release. The vehicle is generally available as a standard five-seat model but some variants additionally support two extra passengers.
The formidable Patrol is big and very imposing, not least because of its high ground clearance. In fact, it really can tackle the roughest of terrains and is as near-indestructible as one could hope for.
Models produced from 1992 onwards are fitted with time-saving fixtures such as power-operated wing mirrors. Inside, meanwhile, ride quality is surprisingly good, especially considering the size of the vehicle, and passenger space is very generous, even for rear-row travellers. The driver is provided with an elevated position – ensuring superb forward and peripheral visibility. This seat is also multi-adjustable and, in conjunction with a rake-adjustable steering wheel, enables a comfortable position to be quickly established. Other standard features include air-conditioning and four electric windows. The Patrol features a 668-litre boot, which can be expanded further with rear seats folded.
Some models are specified with additional features, such as heated leather seats, an intuitive satellite navigation system and rear parking sensors.
Depending on the age of the Patrol, it will generally have a 2.8-litre or 3.0-litre diesel engine fitted. The latter, a four-cylinder unit, produces 160bhp and 380Nm of torque, enabling the Patrol to pull up to 3,500kg. This is harnessed to a five-speed gearbox, while some variants come with four-speed automatic transmission.
