Designed for car enthusiasts with a conscience, the Honda CR-Z was on sale from 2010 to 2013, and was arguably the world’s first mass-produced hybrid sports car. This sharply-styled coupé has a 2+2 layout and a large boot, so it’s practical as well as eco-friendly.

Under the bonnet was a 1.5-litre petrol engine, attached to an electric motor that would kick in under acceleration to boost power by 14bhp. It feels like a supercharged engine, but actually offered impressive fuel efficiency and low emissions - road tax is just £30 a year. And, unlike many hybrids, you can still shift the gears yourself with a slick, short-throw six-speed gearbox.

The chassis is tuned for engaging handling and delivers on its brief, being a pleasure to thread down twisting country roads. The top-of-the-range GT trim included leather upholstery, a panoramic glass roof, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control and automatic lights/wipers. Satellite navigation is also fitted to some models.
