Originally prefixed with the ‘Datsun’ name (until that brand was replaced by Nissan), the Sunny has been around since the mid-1960s. For a further four decades, it was produced for some, if not all, international markets.

The vehicle was first introduced to UK motorists during the 1970s when it was initially called the Datsun 120Y. The Datsun moniker was discontinued in 1986 and, during the same year, the Nissan Sunny became a regular sight on Britain’s roads. It continued to be sold here for another nine years. (The vehicle returned in 2011 but wasn’t released to UK dealers.)

Pre-owned Sunny models are available in three and five-door hatchback, saloon and estate iterations and a four-door saloon body style. (A small number of coupés were manufactured too.) This conservatively styled car wasn’t designed to wow with its looks, however, it was built to last and provide a reliable mode of transport.

Engines produced for the Sunny include 1.4-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel units. It’s the latter that offers the best fuel economy of the bunch: up to 47mpg.
